New Sensor: dCompass

Announcing the release of the new dCompass Sensor for LEGO® MINDSTORMS® NXT! The sensor is a digital compass.

Navigation has never been easier! You can see more about the dCompass:

Two interesting applications we’ll be writing more about in the coming weeks: a fully autonomous robot that that can navigate with the dGPS sensor, and a 9-Degree of Freedom IMU when combined with the dIMU.

    Hi Guys,

It’s a long, long while since I measure magnetic field strength in the Physics Lab…..

    How sensitive is the dCompass?

Could it be used to follow a line made from the magnetic strips used to hold refrigerator doors shut, or a current carrying wire’s magnetic field?

Perhaps you could include a table of gauss readings for various common magnetised objects, such as a fridge-magnet?

  2. Administrator says:

Hey Ray, it could easily measure magnetic fields like that. In fact, the sensor has a wide range of magnetic strengths it can measure from 0.88 gauss up to 8.1 gauss.
